Fractal art: mathematics as material

Fractal art is not simply the automatic output of a formula. The formula supplies a field of possibilities; the artist chooses the region, scale, mapping, palette, effects, light, crop and final medium.

Discovery and authorship coexist

Parameter exploration can feel like landscape photography because an existing mathematical structure is being searched. Yet every renderer exposes choices about calculation and display. Selecting and combining them is a substantial act of authorship.

Exploring parameter space resembles photography because not every visible form is planned in advance. Authorship still lies in formula, region, scale, color source and moment of selection. Another renderer or iteration cutoff can interpret the same location differently. The work is neither pure discovery nor automatic output, but a documentable chain of artistic choices.

Composition survives infinite detail

A deep location is not automatically a strong picture. Visual hierarchy still depends on dominant form, negative space, rhythm, edge behavior and tonal balance. Detail should support the reading distance instead of covering every area uniformly.

Infinite detail does not replace composition. A strong image has emphasis, quiet areas, rhythm and deliberate edge behavior. In square output, a motif can be overwhelmed by black interior or clipped spirals. Aspect ratio and crop should be decided early. A saved square scene may be adapted to a window-shaped screenshot, provided the composition is reviewed afterward.

Reproducibility preserves the work

Saving coordinates alone is insufficient when formula, precision, color source, gradient, effects, lighting and aspect ratio shape the result. A complete scene record turns a beautiful accident into a revisitable region and supports faithful export at other sizes.

A complete scene stores sufficiently precise coordinates, formula version, iteration, color representation, gradients, effects, light, camera and output format. An embedded preview is not enough. Schema and dataset versions allow an older app to identify unsupported features. A successful moment then becomes a work that can be rendered again, shared and developed further.
